TENO RIVER AND NUORGAM POOL ARE PERFECTLY SUITABLE FOR RELAXED CANOEING

Our canoes are high-quality Finnish Anar anchor canoes, which are ideal for two people. For a canoe trip, you’ll need weather-appropriate clothing, suitable shoes, and depending on the length of the trip, some snacks or a packed meal.

From the shore of our holiday village, you can access the Nuorgam pool directly, where the river flows gently downstream. You can paddle all the way to the first Norwegian village, Polmak, or continue further towards the Tanafjord.

Our number one recommendation, Alapulmankijoki, is located in a sheltered valley, where you can enjoy paddling even with little wind without big waves. Paddling with the current is also suitable for beginners, as the river has no rapids or rocks. The self-guided kayaking trip to Alapulmankijoki that we offer includes transport (transport to the upper reaches of the river and retrieval from the lower reaches), canoes, paddles and life jackets for two. Price €95 / 2 persons

Birdwatching

Nuorgam Holiday Village is an excellent base for birdwatching, as there are several interesting birding sites nearby. We’re also just a short distance from Norway and the Arctic Ocean, where you’ll find a truly unique and diverse range of bird species. At Lake Pulmankijärvi, the area’s biodiversity is shaped by its history — it was once part of the Arctic Ocean. Pulmankijärvi offers a distinctive setting, especially for observing waders.

There are many options for day trips to Norway. For example, on Hornøya Island, located near Vadsø, you can see puffins.

Arctic nature

Nuorgam is surrounded by spectacular, open and Arctic nature that is astonishingly diverse, and the Nuorgam Holiday Village is an outstanding base for exploring the Arctic wilderness. The pure nature and clean natural waters with oxygen-rich air will definitely charm you.

The environment is treeless tundra wilderness, given its own character due to proximity of the Arctic Ocean and the mountain birch at its own extremes. Kaldoaivi, Finland’s northernmost roadless wilderness area is just around the corner and provides excellent opportunities for watching nature.

The fauna is plentiful in this area. In Norway and on the shores of the Arctic Ocean you can see species you will not find in Finland. You can observe a number of species of wading birds, and there are a few rare species, such as the extremely rare European freshwater flounder and Myricaria germanica with its only known occurrence in Finland being Pulmakijärvi.

You can spot at least the following species in the immediate vicinity.

ANIMALS

Norway lemming, mountain hare, reindeer, elk, fox. Special species of moths and butterflies.

BIRDS

Willow grouse, merlin, wood sandpiper, red-throated diver, bluethroat, golden plover, red-necked phalarope, black-throated diver, Arctic tern, common redshank, velvet scoter, Temminck’s stint, Siberian tit, Arctic warbler, long-tailed jaeger, common sandpiper, common redpoll

FISH

Grayling, flounder, sea salmon, Arctic charr, whitefish, trout

FLORA

Cloudberry, yellow vetchling, bilberry, mountain birch, Myricaria germanica, lingonberry, mountain bearberry, marsh-marigold, dwarf birch, dwarf willow, crowberry, Habenaria straminea Fernald, Alpine enchanter’s nightshade, mountain bladder fern

Berries And Mushrooms

Superfood Within Easy Reach

The surrounding areas of Nuorgam are excellent for picking berries and mushrooms from late July to early September, until the first night frosts arrive. The berry-picking season begins in July with cloudberries, when the bogs glow yellow. Blueberries and crowberries, which make excellent juice, follow shortly after. The season ends with lingonberries. Picking berries and mushrooms is a right enjoyed by everyone. A nature guide can be arranged to join the excursion for an additional fee.

Cycling

Cycling is a great way to explore the highland areas of Nuorgam without damaging or disturbing nature. Excellent cycling routes include the Pulmankijärvi Road, the museum road, the road across the border to the Norwegian village of Polmak, as well as various trails and off-road vehicle tracks.

Pulmankijärvi Road is about 20 kilometres long, starting from Nuorgam village and leading all the way to the southern end of Lake Pulmankijärvi. The road is paved roughly halfway, after which it continues as a gravel road to the end. Pulmankijärvi Road is perfect for cycling, as it offers sweeping views from the fell highlands stretching to the horizon, as well as the unique natural features of Lake Pulmankijärvi itself. Pulmankijärvi is the northernmost lake in Finland and is a former fjord basin. Before the Ice Age, it was part of the Arctic Ocean. This history is still visible today in the lake’s flora and fauna — for example, it is home to freshwater flounder, and its shores host juniper bushes and hogweed. The road reaches its highest point at the top of Isonkivenvaara, so there are some altitude differences along the route. If you are riding a regular bicycle, we recommend starting from the northern end of Lake Pulmankijärvi. With an electric-assist bike, you can set off right from the holiday village’s yard, as even the steeper hills will not be too much for your calves.

There are several mountain biking routes starting from Nuorgam. For mountain biking, we primarily recommend the Fielmmajärvi route, the Heikkovárri off-road track, or the Pulmankijärvi–Mieraslompolo off-road track. The terrain in the fell highlands can be rocky and, depending on the weather, wet, so we recommend bringing good equipment and snacks on your mountain biking trips. Mountain biking in the Nuorgam highlands is especially great because Pulmankijärvi Road already places the starting point of your mountain biking route high up in the fells. You don’t need to cycle far at all to feel as if you are in the middle of the Kaldoaivi Wilderness Area.

We are happy to provide more information about cycling opportunities in Nuorgam. You will also find tips for cycling routes in our travel guide, available in all accommodations. At our reception, we have sample maps as well as free maps you can take with you to safely navigate the cycling routes. If you are interested in renting a regular or electric fat bike, or an electric road bike for your cycling trip, you can check the rental information here.
