Nuorgam is the Gateway to the Arctic Ocean

Norway and the Arctic Ocean are just a stone’s throw from Nuorgam. Norway is a whole world of its own throughout the year; experience small fishing villages, strong Sea Sámi culture, and the idyllic Finnish culture in Bugøynes, Little Finland.

A day trip to Norway can travel for instance, from Nuorgam via Varangerbotn to the town of Vadsø. From there you can continue your journey all the way up to Hamningberg where you will experience landscape that looks more like a moonscape. At Vadsø you can combine your journey with a cruise to Kirkenes on the Hurtigruten ferry and return to Nuorgam by car.

We recommend visiting the Sámi museums in Polmak or Varanger and a shopping trip to Tana (Sámi Sölv – Sámi jewellery boutique and handicraft exhibition).

Polar Night

In Lapland you can experience twilight or the Polar Night – a time when the sun doesn’t rise above the horizon at all. The Polar Night in Nuorgam lasts for over 50 days – from the end of November through to mid-January (26 November – 16 January). The Polar Night is a twilight time, but the moonlight and glistening white snowscapes together with the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) will light up Lapland’s magnificent snowy nature before your eyes. The Polar Night paints the horizon with spectacular colours and the daily Blue Moment is a stunning experience.

If you yearn for larger waters, take a day trip to the Arctic Ocean where you can even experience sea fishing during the winter months. Why not try a red king crab safari?

Mountain Biking

In the magnificent landscapes surrounding Nuorgam, on top of the fells and down in the river valley, even the most demanding of mountain bikers will discover their own trails. Choose a suitable route according to your technical cycling skills or physical fitness. The demanding ascents provide a challenge for even the fittest of people, whereas the flat and easy traversable highlands leave space for nature’s strong presence and enjoying the breathtaking panoramic views of the landscape. You can access some routes by car along gravel roads that take you to the highland area, from which you can continue into the terrain. Make sure you carry a GPS device, compass and map with you at all times.
